Willow Weekend Workshop

Discover the ancient craft of willow weaving whilst you enjoy making traditional baskets to take home
Taught by Norah Kennedy
Fri 24 - Sun 26 Apr 2015
This two and a half day course will introduce you to the different weaves, colours and varieties of willow. By the end of the course you will have made two or three round baskets or if more experienced an oval or square basket for use in the house or garden. As you weave your basket you will be introduced to techniques such as slewing, randing, pairing and waling so that each of your baskets is unique. You will return home with a sense of achievement in the beautiful objects you have made.
Norah will teach you about the history and traditions of this five thousand year old craft. In the evening you will watch a DVD showing how the willow is grown, harvested and processed for use by different basket makers. There will also be books and photographs to inform and inspire.
Note: There is a small charge for materials used based on the size of your baskets, usually around £25 payable to Norah direct.
Norah’s love of natural materials started when she worked as a herdswomen and was enhanced when she retrained as a willow basketmaker in the 1980s. Her interest lies in making baskets that are ‘right in themselves and good for use’ and reviving at least a portion of the many traditional uses for willow that have been superseded, but not surpassed, by synthetic materials. She has been teaching at Kingcombe for eighteen years.
Norah will also be teaching Willow Structures for the Garden (Mon 27 Apr), Willow Workshop
(Mon 9 Thur 12 Nov) and Festive Willow (Fri 13 Nov).
