Macro Photography Weekend

Friday 6 July 2018 17:00 - Sunday 8 July 2018 16:00

Macro-photography-workshop--John-Bebbingtonmain

Develop your macro and close up photography of plants and invertebrates, improve your field craft and overcome the challenges.

Finding suitable subjects and approaching them carefully (especially where insects and spiders are concerned) are essential skills in field close up and macro photography. John will provide tuition not only in field craft but also in selection of subject matter, viewpoint, choice of shooting and metering modes, aperture and shutter speed. He will also be able to advise on focus stacking, which can produce remarkable results.

You will spend most of each day in the field, exploring Ryewater Nursery reserve on the Saturday and the Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve, which surrounds the Centre and provides a wealth of opportunities, on the Sunday. There will be opportunities to process, project and evaluate images on the Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. John will run a moth trap on the Friday and Saturday nights, and there will be a chance to inspect and photograph specimens before breakfast the next morning.

Suitable for any level of experience from beginner to advanced practitioner, although you will need to have had some experience of working with a digital camera and be able to use photographic software.

John Bebbington has been leading close-up and macro photography day and residential courses in the UK and in Europe since 1979. He has been a member of the Royal Photographic Society Nature Group since 1978, gaining his ARPS in the same year and his Fellowship in 1991 with a panel on ‘Protective Colour in European Lepidoptera’. In September 2016, John was presented with the RPS Fenton Medal and honorary life membership, awarded for his outstanding contribution to the work of the Royal Photographic Society. He is currently serving his fourth term on the RPS Associateship and Fellowship panel (Natural History category). His book Insect Photography - Art and Techniques has worldwide sales and he has illustrated his wife Anne’s Understanding the Flowering Plants, a basic botany text for artists, illustrators and plant photographers.
