Dorset's Butterflies and Moths

Monday 9 July 2018 13:00 - Friday 13 July 2018 12:00

Dorset-butterflies-and-moths--Debbie-Billenmain

Discover the diversity of summer butterflies and moths across Dorset’s famed landscape of chalk downlands, pastures, woodlands and coast.

This special course will take you to a number of diverse chalk downland and coastal habitats that are rich in butterflies active in high summer. Visits to Giant Hill, Cerne Abbas, Powerstock Common and Lulworth Cove – home to the famed Lulworth skipper, will allow you to discover the range of butterflies and day-flying moths in this area.

In addition, we will be using moth light traps in the grounds of the Kingcombe Centre to provide an opportunity to learn through identification in addition to illustrated talks. Although we can’t predict the weather conditions, to give you an indication of the diversity of species at Kingcombe, in recent years we have caught in excess of 100 different macro-moth species. Highlights include the very rare lappet moth and the splendid brocade, which still has less than 150 records in the UK and was first spotted only 18 years ago. Our proximity to the World Heritage Jurassic coastline allows opportunities to see migrants from North Africa and the Mediterranean.

Suitable for all levels of experience.

There will be a fair amount of walking over relatively rough terrain during the day. Please be prepared for this and for some standing as you listen to discussion points.
