Discover the ancient craft of willow weaving whilst you enjoy making traditional baskets to take home.

This four day course will introduce you to the different weaves, colours and varieties of willow.  By the end of the course you will have made three or four round baskets, or if more experienced, an oval or square basket for use in the house or garden.  As you weave your basket you will be introduced to techniques such as slewing, randing, pairing and waling so that each of your baskets is unique.  You will return home with a sense of achievement in the beautiful objects that you have made.

Norah will teach you about the history and traditions of this five thousand year old craft.  In the evening you will watch a DVD showing how the willow is grown, harvested and processed for use by different basket makers.  There will also be books and photographs to inform and inspire.

Note:  There is a small additional charge for materials used based on the size of your baskets, approx. £25 - £35 payable to Norah on the day.

About the Leader:

Norah Kennedy's love of natural materials started when she worked as a herdswoman and was enhanced when she retrained as a willow basket maker in the 1980s.  Her interest lies in making baskets that are ‘right in themselves and good for use’ and reviving at least a portion of the many traditional uses for willow that have been superseded, but not surpassed, by synthetic materials.  She has been teaching at Kingcombe for eighteen years.

Norah will also be teaching Willow Weekend Workshop (Fri 21 – Sun 23 Apr), Willow Structures for the Garden (Mon 24 Apr) and Festive Willow Morning (Fri 17 Nov).

Comments from previous events:
Great residential course - willow weaving, would highly recommend this centre. Catering was amazing as usual, rooms are basic but very comfortable. Staff are welcoming and the location is beautiful, well worth a day out or staying for a few days and learning a new skill on one of the fabulous courses available. Just spent 3 days weaving willow and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Can't wait to go again - Deborah.
