Willow Basket Weekend Workshop

Discover the ancient craft of willow weaving whilst you enjoy making traditional round baskets to take home.
This two and a half day course will introduce you to the different weaves, colours and varieties of willow. By the end of the course you will have made two or three round baskets for use in the house or garden. As you weave your basket you will be introduced to techniques such as slewing, randing, pairing and waling so that each of your baskets is unique. You will return home with a sense of achievement in the beautiful objects that you have made.
Richard and Sue will teach you about the history and traditions of this 12 thousand year old craft. In the evening there will be a talk and demonstration of willow weaving. There will also be books and photographs to inform and inspire.
About the Leaders:
Suzanne and Richard Kerwood have been growing and weaving living willow in the UK since 1997 - a big contrast from their previous occupations (a bank officer and flying instructor respectively). Over the last 5 years they have specialised in bespoke projects including many restaurant interiors, various garden features and fencing. Based on the outskirts of Exeter, Windrush grows 150 varieties of living willow. The hand-planting, harvesting, drying and weaving gives them a real sense of pride in their work and efforts to achieve an environmentally balanced lifestyle.
Suzanne and Richard will also be teaching a Willow Basket Making Workshop on (Fri 18 – Sun 20 Mar).
£279 pp Residential - includes 2 nights sole occupancy accommodation, full board including a home-cooked breakfast, tea/cake, lunch and 3 course dinner, all tuition/activities.
£199 pp Non-Residential - includes all of the above except accommodation and breakfast.
Note: There is a small charge for materials used based on the size of your baskets, usually around £25 payable to Richard and Sue on the day.
The course will start at 1pm on Friday with lunch, before the first afternoon session. The course will finish at approximately 4pm on Sunday with afternoon tea.
What to bring:
All tools are provided, however please bring the following if you already have them: sharp pair of secateurs, knife, apron, notebook and camera.
