Discover the wildflowers, orchids and rare Marsh Fritillary butterflies of Powerstock Common.

Early summer is one of the best times to visit, with the multitude of wildflowers in bloom across Powerstock’s range of habitats.  In particular the orchids including Common Spotted, Heath Spotted and if you’re lucky the Greater Butterfly orchid.

Marsh Fritillaries are one of the UK’s rarest butterflies which still have a stronghold in Powerstock Common Nature Reserve.  As one of the earlier butterflies to emerge, this walk will give you a fantastic opportunity to see these in their natural habitat of unimproved grasslands together with hearing how Dorset Wildlife Trust manage this habitat to ensure successful breeding.

Other species may be on the wing and you may catch a glimpse of the Narrow Boarded Bee Hawk moth that utilises the same habitat as the Marsh Fritillary.

About the Leaders:

Maurits Fontein is the West Dorset Land Management Officer and has been working on Powerstock Common for the last 5 years and with DWT for over 15 years.  Maurits has studied and worked with Marsh Fritillaries since his university days when he studied Rural Resource Management MSc at Bangor University.  Since then he has worked on land management and conservation across the UK, together with overseas projects.

Jim White is a keen naturalist and has been connected to the Dorset Wildlife Trust since moving to Dorset in 1979.  He has always been passionate about nature and spent his entire professional career working in nature conservation, ending with 13 years as the Dorset team manager for English Nature (now Natural England).  He was awarded an MBE in 2008 for his services to nature conservation in Dorset.
