Discover the world of bumblebees on this ever popular hands-on identification workshop at Kingcombe.

We are all familiar with the sight of a large and usually brightly coloured bumblebee ambling about our garden flowers, or in flower-rich countryside grassland.  But how many people are aware that there are twenty two species of bumblebee resident in Britain and Ireland?  This course will serve as an introduction to bumblebees, their identification and ecology.  It will be very hands-on, using a selection of mounted specimens initially, before trying out your new-found identification skills on live insects in the meadows around The Kingcombe Centre.

About the Leader:

Bryan Pinchen has had a lifelong interest in the natural world.  His work has included seabird protection, studying feral goats, physical habitat management and wildlife surveys.  In 2000, he became fully self-employed working on insect ecology projects, undertaking general insect surveys countrywide and advising on habitat management on a range of nature reserves for the major conservation agencies and other organisations.  Bryan also teaches and lectures on a number of natural history subjects and has also written, illustrated and published insect identification guides covering bumblebees, ladybirds, grasshoppers and crickets, shieldbugs and leatherbugs, using the imprint name Forficula Books.

£63 pp  -  includes all tuition, materials as per above, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.

Arrive from 9.45am for morning tea.  The course will start at 10.00am and finish at 4.00pm.

What to bring:
